you get what you pay for, no complaints.very nice----'well packaged and all parts included with clear and complete instructions.while not the heavy solid school furniture from my childhood, it looks adorable and is functional too. its quality is similar to ikea's furniture, and it is wood, not particle board. the safety of the desk lid was of concern to me, and i was very happy to find that the safety device is excellent----there is no way that the desk lid could drop onto a child's head or hands. the desk top comes completely assembled so that i did not have to worry about installing the safety device myself. the ONLY problem i found was that the l-shaped tool (ikea & most others come with a similar tool) was a poor fit for the bolts that put the desk and chair together-----assembly would have taken 20 minutes with a better tool, but my granddaughter and i worked at it for half hour intervals over several days (probably 3 to 4 hours total)-----probably should have asked her dad for help/tools. my granddaughter loves her birthday gift, and i would definitely buy it again. The top board where it meets the storage area on the left & right corner will not completely close. You need to apply pressure to close completely and it will be temporary until you release the pressure and this is due to poor craftmanship on the rear of the top board and the two cheap hinges. When I received this desk, I was impressed by the quality of the wood and ease to assemble. But when I pulled the desk out and tried out the top board to open & close, I found that the top board would not close all the way when I pushed it down. The most crucial & critical point of the desk is the top board that will open & close, and it is the weakest link in the desk. If they have it designed with a small gap in the end of the top board and installed a hinge that will allow for a gap, this will solve the front left & right gap issue. But personally, I feel the slant is too deep because crayons, pencils, & books will slide down.We bought this desk for our four-year-old daughter and it fits the bill quite nicely. She will get several years of use out of it.Like others, I had trouble with one of the pre-drilled holes stripping on the section where the legs meet the body of the desk, which was definitely not due to over-tightening. I would recommend anyone putting one of these together to use liberal amounts of wood glue on the dowels and where the body meets the legs. Having done that, I am completely confident this desk will be viable long after my daughter is too big to use it (as long as she's not climbing on it).I will also attest that this desk is made of solid wood. It's not heavy, by any means, but it is solid. For the price, this desk can't be beaten. Would have given 5-stars except for the stripped hole.I was surprised when I received this item because they shipped me the walnut finish instead of the pecan that I ordered...the Pecan that is part of the items name! Okay, fine, instead of the hassle of returning, we'll just live with the walnut finish. The finish is not real uniform or polished. A low quality wood is used and it is made up of what looks to be scrap wood with finger joinery,,,which is clearly visible on the desktop (a total of 9 finger joints forming desktop!). The only quality item on the desk itself is the hinge that is used, which keeps the top from slamming closed or pinching fingers.Assembly: the four desk parts (body, 2 legs, stretcher) are held together by 6 short (#12?) wood screws with allen wrench heads. The main desk body with the top comes in one piece, then you add the legs and the back stretcher. Attempting to screw in the first screw was almost impossible with stripping the head, because, as I investigated further, I found that the pre-drilled holes were not large enough to accommodate such a thick screw. So I had to get out the drill and enlarge all the holes to avoid stripping any more screw heads. The allen wrench they give you is also inadequate, it's just a hair too small for the screw-heads to be able to get enough torque. The chair is made up of 6 parts; 2 sides (legs), seat, and three pieces making up the back. All put together with the same big screws, only longer than the desk screws.Again, we are not happy with the quality, but it will suffice to use it until our son gets older. No I would not recommend this, surely there are better quality desks available elsewhere.
